Tiroler Festspiele Erl Presents: Wagner's "Das Rheingold"

What is a ring? A ring is a piece of jewelry made of precious metal that you wear on your finger... The ring in Wagner's tetralogy is also a piece of jewelry, forged from stolen gold by a creature that Wagner calls "Alberich" and who uses it to gain endless, hopeless power until Wotan, the father of the gods - ridden by Loge's devilry - takes his ring and power from him using more than unfair means. The ring remains stolen gold, and is also afflicted with a wild curse, and metaphorically expands into an arena surrounded by mostly sibling pairs, some of whom love each other and others who kill each other.

The overlord of all the divine and less divine opponents is driven to the point of burnout. He resignedly gives up the ringless power he has left, hoping for a hero, sovereign and free from any constraints. The chosen one is Siegfried, Wotan's grandson and the fruit of an incestuous love frenzy. Far from rationally grasping the scheming and murderous events around him, Siegfried remains a plaything and victim of the dark forces that are  fighting with Wotan for supremacy in Wagner's “The Ring of the Nibelung”. Wagner calls “Rheingold” “Eve” – a crime comedy that marks the start of the three-day stage festival. The whole thing has the potential to be great, but dark, entertainment.

An intoxicating musical language meets a wordy emotional event that takes place at diverse, visually stunning crime scenes. Wagner's imagination foresaw the perfect Hollywood fantasy film. If we managed to offer “entertainment” at the highest level, it would be a gem in the tremendous reception history of the “Ring”  ...

Ian will perform the role of Loge.
